How long have you been using ON1?
Scott: I have been using ON1 products in my photography for at least 10 years. Maybe 12? Definitely double digits.
Why do you like ON1 Photo RAW?
Scott: I like that the ON1 tools are in-depth. What I mean by this: As you grow as a photographer and your processing skills improve, you can “unlock” the next level of power of ON1. Ready to go beyond 1-click looks? You have effects. Ready to apply selective treatments and not just global adjustments? You have masking for local effects and adjustments. Want to try your hand at multi-image manipulation? You have layers. As you grow, ON1 Photo RAW supports you.
Which feature(s) do you prefer?
Scott: ON1 effects, without a doubt. There is an ON1 filter involved in almost every one of my images. If I had to choose three filters, give me dynamic contrast, sunlight and color adjustment. I use many others depending on the image, but these three are my go-tos.
What is your best advice for new photographers using ON1 Photo RAW?
Scott: Two things, I suppose. First, check out Browse and learn how cataloged folders work. These make searching for images much easier. Second, start with the presets. Apply the one you like, then “cycle” through the preset. In the Edit module, review the changes made in Develop and the filters applied in Effects. Turn each filter on and off to see how each filter adjusts your photo.
What is always in your camera bag (besides the camera)?
Scott: Well…another camera? Always have a backup, right! Ok…the basics – memory cards and extra batteries. As a landscape photographer, sometimes reaching a location involves a healthy hike. I don’t want to be out in the field and have a problem with a memory card (yes, that’s happened to me) or have a battery die just when the light is good. An equipment breakdown that spoils a shoot makes the return to the car particularly long.
What inspires your photographic style?
Scott: I am a landscape photographer and I seek the beauty of nature. I want my best photos to evoke a sense of wonder and awe of nature, and to be immersive, inviting you into the frame. I also like post-processing, so I’m not at all against adjusting colors, enhancing textures, adding contrast, boosting light… shaping an image to guide my viewer to important parts of the scene. Yet I still want the image to look natural overall. Superb, but realistic. Believeable. Mother Nature on a *really* good day.
Where is the best place to follow you?
Scott: All the paths that lead me start and end on my website. I am very active on YouTube where you can find many free ON1 tutorials.
